FLIP-FLOP! HP announces to keep its PC division! So when’s the next $99 TouchPad??!

27 Oct

“Hopefully this is a beginning of a set of events over the next year that demonstrates the board has a better grip on things,” Forrester analyst Frank Gillett said. “It didnt feel well thought out or well executed in August.

“Separating the PC business would have meant about $1.5 billion in one-time expenses including establishing the infrastructure such as new systems for IT, support, sales and channel operations, a company spokesman said.

The elimination of joint opportunities — such as branding and procurement — would have cost HP over $1 billion annually, he said.

Some of the alternatives that HP was previously considering included hiving off the business into a separate company through a spin-off or sale.

Bill Gates is set to give a talk today for an event at the University of Washington’s School of Computer Science and Engineering. It starts at 3:30PST, so in just about 15 minutes.

Here’s the stream: http://www.livestream.com/billgates

The topic will be advances in computing, including natural user interfaces and pervasive computing that could change the way the bottom 1/3rd of the world’s population lives. For all the fanfare about the 99% here in the states, it’s humbling to remember that to much of the world, we are the 1% with adequate fresh water, free and comprehensive public schooling, working sewage and other basic utilities, and so on.
